Help for the Homefront

PHASE 2: Remodeled Kitchen & New Deck in 2023

CLIENTS: Peter and Liz Wasilewski of Ann Arbor, MI

This amazing community service work began in 2022, Justin Corry, Co-Founder of Corry Contracting Company and former Marine, was searching for a fellow veteran to help. He learned of Peter Wasilewski’s home, and the inability for their residence to qualify for VA assistance because it is a mobile home. After a lot of hard work and solicitations to suppliers and subcontractors, they successfully completed phase one - a wheelchair accessible bathroom, roll-in shower & changing area - with a $17,500 grant from the BRAG Ann Arbor Foundation.

During the process, it was apparent that more help would be needed to make the Wasilewski home suitable for living with Peter's mobility challenges. Their kitchen floor had holes patched with plywood, rotted cabinets & countertops were left from a previous contractor’s unfinished work, and Peter’s favorite place to relax, his deck, was collapsing. After seeing the Phase One’s success, Semper Fi & America's Fund, a nationally known U.S. Marine veteran’s group, agreed to provide funds needed for repairing the kitchen and deck.

Thanks to everyone who helped to improve the quality of life for this appreciative family!

PHASE 1: Accessible Bathroom, Custom Shower and Changing Area

In 2022 a group of BRAG Ann Arbor members renewed our community service effort aimed at helping local veterans, known as Help for the Homefront. Justin Corry of Corry Contracting, a former Marine himself, stepped up to lead the effort. With a supportive Remodelers Council, his mission to assist local veterans with home improvements began.

After contacting veterans groups, Justin met Peter Wasilewski. Peter had served in the 2nd reconnaissance battalion, 2nd Marine division out of Camp Lejeune, and was deployed to Vietnam in 1969. He was among many veterans exposed to toxic Agent Orange chemicals during his service. This led to Diabetes, and in turn amputation of his fingers and leg, confining him to a wheelchair. Both issues have created mobility issues within his home, including the inability to use his shower.

Justin put together an ambitious plan to completely remodel the Wasilewski’s bathroom - the top priority to dramatically improve his quality of life. In May, the BRAG Ann Arbor Foundation awarded $17,500 to help cover the project costs, raised from the BRAG members. Many contributors volunteered labor and donated materials as well.
